thats a valid point UltraNutz if work done at a dealer, but for home workshop where money maybe an issue going through top can be a winner
they are taken apart and put back together all day long robbyville, its good way to learn about bike and how it goes together
they main issue is to put rocker support plates back on "level" for each cylinder otherwise you will think something not right as cant spin pushrod, 1/4 turn of each bolt in pattern outlined in manual, wait 30-60mins, onto next cylinder
thanks

my point was and it doesn't matter if it's a shop or your garage;
it's 6 of 1 or 1/2 dozen of the other. Doesn't really matter which way you do it, the end result will be the same. One way involves more time and is less expensive, the other way is quicker and costs a bit more.
Your on the right track, as ultra stated new gaskets are a no brainer.....
As for pushrods, .0020" on the base circle is enough reason to to use adjustables IMO. Will it run with stockers in there? Yes for sure,but the rocker box gaskets are like $60 if I'm not mistaken. Not to mention if your getting lifter noise after the install you have no option to preload the lifters any further. You may be fine with stockers or you may notice a little lifter noise right off the bat that you can't correct.

Agreed, I think I just needed to get my mind there as well. Hopefully I only do this once but just in case I think those adjustable rods will be nice and I'm sure that the opportunity to open the top of the engine will come in time!
Joys of the forum, being led down a path of discovery. I'll be in the area of my dealership today so will try to bring back the top end gasket kit for refund.
As far as gaskets that I'll need; the rods come with lifter cap gaskets, I have a gasket for the cam chest, can spacers, and tube covers. So the only other items I need are header gaskets and the one o ring for the oil pump is that right?

change all 3 orings in the camchest while you have it apart. (2) part # 11301 and (1) part # 11293. Don't skimp on the bearings either. Odds are you are not going to need the spacer kit. When you pull off your chain tensioners, pull them apart, clean them out, and inspect them. When you put them back together, put a few drops of oil back in them during reassembly.

Funny I've noticed that, somehow I've gone from doing a 5k service to cam replacement (thanks to HDPilot's thread)

Will do! I have the Torrington bearings that you recommended in my cart.

Son of a b... Just ordered everything before reading your post paid $236 for the cams, going to see if it's too late to change.
As for lifters, I got the S&S 33-5350, apparently better than stock and reasonable priced at $104 through Amazon

I just went through this myself. I chose Comp Cams 850 lifters. They are the same lifters used in LS motors (Small Block Chevs of today). They are american made, I ordered mine from Jegs and they were $79 to the house (set of 4).

good lifters that seem to hold up well and at 1/10 the cost of the name brands that people seem to be having issues with pumping up, bleeding down, etc.
