Default Burnt oil smell....

Hi gang. I'm new here; this is my first thread. This forum has taught me a bundle...hopefully I can return the favor some day.

I recently had a factory rebuild done on my 94 Softail's Evo motor. Got the bike all back together, did the multiple heat-cycle break-in procedure, everything seemed fine at that point. After the heat-cycle break-in I rode the bike maybe 20 miles at varying speeds and RPM's so as not to overheat/overtax the new engine. My intention was to get home and drain the oil out immediately, but for various reasons that didn't happen. The bike sat for a few months.

Then yesterday I took it out for about 20 miles of easy, varying speed and RPM riding just to get that "dirty" oil hot enough to drain. As I was riding it around my area though, I noticed at stop lights, a burnt-oil smell. It wasn't overpowering, but it was there. I got the bike home and changed the oil as planned, but wasn't able to do anymore riding.

The burnt oil smell has me worried...is this normal for new Evo break-in??

Thanks

Logan

Default No It's not

First off I would check to make sure that none of the rocker gaskets are leaking onto the exhaust. Take a real good look with a flashlight. Second you should not have to change the oil for 500 mile break in. Third if you're that worried check your plugs (there is a sticky in the Evo Classic Model forum that will guide you to what your motor is dong). Fourth you should have a warranty on the motor so 500 mile will tell you if you're burning. Keep an eye on your oil level.
