Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Hey thanks for reading . I have a 103 on a streetglide, rhinehart true duals, heavy breather, sert..just got it tuned and am pleased but thinking maybe a little more low end . My original plan was 30 tooth front pulley and 103MR ss cam. With head porting . After talking with my dad , he believes the engine would be unreliable after porting the heads and I read somewhere on here about the 96s and 103s running close due to heads having similar airflow . Would porting make the bike unreliable . And what would be some other options if so . Would a cam by itself make a big difference even with the stock head . It's hard to justify 700$$ for s&s gear drive cam with minimal gain ? .. thanks
The 96"and 1043" heads have similar air flow because they are identical. Head porting would not make the motor unreliable.
The 30T trans pulley swap is a lot of work and will require a new belt, 139T I believe and I don't believe the MoCo offers a 139T belt. There have been many belt failures resulting from the 30T trans pulley swap. Swapping to the 30T trans pulley and a 68T rear wheel pulley allows one to retain the stock belt.
In your situation, I would probably opt for the Andrews 48 over the MR103, ride it for a while before diving into re-gearing. If your bike is an '09 or later model, the 30T trans pulley won't make as dramatic a change as it would on an '08 or earlier model.

For that low end grunt the 48 Will do it, and it's cheaper than the mr103 set probably. I also agree on the headporting not being unreliable. Good advice as usual.
