Hello all
I recently purchased a 1993 1200 sportster . tore down top end to find a broken exhaust valve on rear cyl . How would I check the rods for straightness. I did buy the extended wrist pin tool by Jims .
How does the piston look? Is it damaged? How high is piston in the cylinder at the top of the stroke? Is it the same as the other piston?
If the top of the piston isn't damage and the height of the pistons are the same in both cylinders you can safely assume the connecting rod wasn't bent.

Hello Dave thank you for your reply , the pistons do have some minor scores on lower portion of each piston and on each cylinder .as mentioned earlier the engine only has 100 miles of run time and when I removed the heads found puddles of oil on each piston . that was the reason I removed heads again because smoke coming from exhaust pipes . the heads were rechecked and found to be ok . I am trying to find what might have gone wrong and why oil is being pulled up to top of cyl. before I put back together . with wrist pin tool installed and lowered to engine block I measured .011 clearance on left side and .027 on right side . both rods measure about the same
