Yes you can; however, why remove the trans when the internals can be replaced without removing the trans case?

Here's what I see transpiring, You install a used tranny, roll it out of the driveway, take of down the street, and shell the used tranny. Best to get a new gear set.
The gears are totally shot I was figuring on just getting a used trainee and put it on
Tell us what happened, and how you determined the gears are totally shot.
Have you disassembled the transmission?

A new gearset from Harley is about 1500 bucks..
A used 5 speed low mileage gearset can be had for about 150-200 bucks that has been removed from someones transmission because they just had to have a 6 speed.
