Default compensator?

I see that there is a sprocket made to replace the compensator.I think I remember reading about problems with compensaters on newerbikes,is that the main reason for the sprocket?whats the compensators job?Is it to limit torque to the flywheels when downshifting?or is it to reduce felt vibration?Sorry for so many questions, it seems like with a belt drive and a primary chain there would be enough there to absorb hard downshifts without compensator?
