Cool S&S Gear Drive Backlash Setting

This is a question for you guys that have experience in installing S&S or Andrews gear drives. I know that the backlash on the inner and outer gears should be checked separately and should have .0005-.001" backlash. There are oversize and undersize cam and pinion gears to help you achieve this.
My question is how often do you run into having to use these under and over size gears? Is it common to run into this or are they usually in spec. with the stock gear set in the kit? I'm sure there are a lot of people that check the run out on the crank and then put the gears in and never check the backlash. I know some of them. I am just trying to get my ducks lined up.
Don't wont to have to buy $100-$200 worth of extra gears on top of the price of the kit and be stuck with gears I cant use. Any help or input on this would be appreciated.......Thanks..."Mac"

Yeah, my humble, little experience backs up mr. prodrag's.
Thinking of your question, I reread the S&S instructions to refresh what it was all about. I had installed an S510g, geared-cam set over Christmass break on my softail.

I did the runout measurement for sure, and it was well under .003". But then I got to the backlash diagnostic section, and decided fuke-it, I'll put it all together, see how it fits and sounds. And there was no whining gear noise, almost no noise difference except for a little more tappety noise, and the bike runs great. A good kick in the pants.

Thanks, I would guess that you like that outcome. Hope mine ends up like that and doesn't whine like a blower. I can do a gear setup cheaper than a hydraulic.

Do a good job with the runout check and then go for it and assemble.
Just take as much time as you need assembling, pressing, adjusting pushrods, etc. My belief is you'll know right away if things don't sound right and backlash is a problem, although I can't specifically back that up with a bad experience.
It's likely going to be great, and you'll enjoy the hell out of it. Get her tuned up ( carb or fuel-injected) with a good indy shop. Have fun.
