Just a couple comments...

Really you are asking "What would you do if you were me?"... because we all have different resources and skills

And more importantly... I would talk to the Mgr about this guy's smirk

I would keep the bike, regardless of which path taken to restore it to operation and there are several paths. I know $$ can become an issue but it is what it is and unfortunately, $$ are required to replace or restore the motorcycle. I would choose that path carefully based on which path would insure that, barring an unusual situation, I would not be spending any more for a long while.
You may be a candidate for the HD motor program; Long Block, Short Block or Crate motor. Long block is about $3500; not sure about pricing of short blocks or crate motors. Lots will push toward the S&S 124 which, if affordable, would be sweet in your Road King. However if funds are an issue, the HD motor program will be cheaper than a rebuild.

I would consider the Harley SE 103 crate motor, the S&S 111 or the S&S 124 LC
It's a nice-looking bike! you have it pretty much the way you want it, unless you were already considering something else I would just put a crate motor in it and enjoy it

Just got back from checking out the motor. I had a tear in my eye. She's Fu(k'd all right. There were 1/4" dents in the wall from the valve being smashed. Valve spring broke and all hell broke lose. Looks like a rebuild is not an option. I would love a 124 or 120R but I like to ride Long distance and would like reliability first. I will keep looking thanks for the info.
I have owned this since new in 2005 and its taken me this long to get it Just the way I LOVE it. The Only thing stock on the bike is the frame.

Even more reason to just replace the engine with a crate motor.

While one from Harley may be better on the checkbook at first glance, outsourced parts (bad) and increased tolerances (very bad)will end up costing more than one from S&S Cycle in the end.

124LC will give you a 10.2 compression ratio for the reliability you need.

Did you ever find out what caused the catastrophic meltdown?

Here's something to consider that you're really not going to like. Wheel the bike into your garage as is and leave it alone until you can do what you want without upsetting the wife. Oddjobs, overtime, etc. Unless it's your main means of transportation there's nothing saying you have to fix it right now.

I'm like you I have had my hands on every piece of my bike to make it just right. I don't think I could stomach selling it to a stranger and if it were disabled like yours I wouldn't be in a position to buy a new engine so I'd have to just hang onto it until I could.

Edit to add. .used engines go on eBay/Craigslist etc for $1000. Not a big job to swap an entire engine. You're not looking at 6-10k here if you just want a running bike until you can afford to do more to it another day.

Yes valve spring.

Looks like riding season is over for me for this year. It could always be worse.
