Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Here's something to consider that you're really not going to like. Wheel the bike into your garage as is and leave it alone until you can do what you want without upsetting the wife. Oddjobs, overtime, etc. Unless it's your main means of transportation there's nothing saying you have to fix it right now.
I'm like you I have had my hands on every piece of my bike to make it just right. I don't think I could stomach selling it to a stranger and if it were disabled like yours I wouldn't be in a position to buy a new engine so I'd have to just hang onto it until I could.
Edit to add. .used engines go on eBay/Craigslist etc for $1000. Not a big job to swap an entire engine. You're not looking at 6-10k here if you just want a running bike until you can afford to do more to it another day.
Ouch! Used engine would be my route just for the time being... Afraid of the dog house? Been there before, act depressed it works better than being livid or finding a reason for her to say get rid of that money pit! Do it right and you'll get laid every night too... Haha I had a 70 C10 that one of my exes was jealous of I spent more time with that than her. But she didn't mind riding around in it after the custom pain job was done and always wanted to go places with it... Til one night I got a little boozed up and decided to roast the tires 1st-4th upper hose popped and I didn't lift... 8500rpm then I smelled oil burning shortly there after pinging knocking clanking and kaput. I used to stare out in the driveway at it with mint oil dab of that near your eyes let her see the tears. Pulls on their heart strings then their selfish you don't spend money on me, you don't spend time with me BS goes out the window.
I'm at 43000 kms, if I could go another 120,000 ks before a catastrophic malfunction I would be happy. Rebuild that old girl bigger and better than ever!!!
Guys that pull the stock motor in favor of a se120 sell the take outs all the time. Some have almost zero miles on them. Look around for one of those before you jump off a bridge.

We have all been there! I'm on my 3rd motor in my 07 fxst. Almost gave up after my last one **** the bit. Took me a year to save up for the 124"er.
I'm not technically knowledgeable, so could you tell me if that spring is a stock HD spring, and original or was it installed 5 years ago?
No Its not a stock spring. It was changed with the motor upgrade in 2007. @ about 12,000km
S&S I believe. It cam in a kit with the Cams and pushrods and pistons.
