Freak failure, s**t happens sometimes. I would rebuild it better than ever when you can. Have to find balance between finance, family and recreation all three are important and each is better with the other two.
Keep your head up.

S&S I believe. It cam in a kit with the Cams and pushrods and pistons.
Sorry about your motor, and thanks for getting back too me. That is very disheartening to hear you only got 7500 miles out of the build. I've read similar incidents but it was the usual suspects (Harley lifters, cam bearings, cam chain tensioners, etc.).

Seems like you really love that bike, so I imagine you will rebuild. I would just go with a 124 and basically be done.

JMO as much as I think I want a newer model bike, I am not anywhere near ready to get rid of or basically give away what I have invested in mine. I would be upset if this happened to me and the Mrs. would be worse! But I have to say if it were mine it would get fixed. Maybe not like I totally want at first but it would be fixed to my liking before long. Of course I do my own wrenching so that helps a lot with the costs. I read all the information everyone has posted and there are some good points and some ideas to help save some $$s to get it back up and running. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I just spent 10 grand on new a baker 6 speed, paint, apes, and other improvements last winter.
The engine was worked on 5 years (cams, heads, etc)

What would you do? Put another 6-10 grand into the engine and sell it or keep it. That would be app. 20 grand since May.
Or sell it as is with blown motor.??

p.s. My wife is not too thrilled right now.

Piston, e-bay head, and some gaskets.......insure the rod isn't bent and your back is business?
Seen worse that are now running well.

Thanks Scott, I really do feel much better just looking at your credentials.
I would like to get the same amount of power that I had (app. 125hp). Hopefully rebuilding my old engine for a few grand will get it back on the road this year . If its going to cost over 5 then it will be a winter project with a new engine.
Thanks for all the reply's

Check the crank runout and hope it falls at or below .003" and not the updated tolerance of .012".

We have witnesses on more than one occasion, even OE valves break/springs break on heads that come in here for repair.
When a valve becomes wadded up in the chamber like that, always check that rod for straightness/square to the cases deck.
