Default advise re; tuning

I have a 2005 softail standard efi. Recently I put drag pipes on it, and now I am putting a K&N heavy breather on. I am getting a lot of stories about tuning, from a $200.00 computer download to Power packs, to fuel packs etc. HD is recommending an EFI supertuner, and dyno tuning at $1000.00. I'm looking for any advise.

Research...

What is the ultimate goal? Price range? Do you want to make your own adjustments to the MAP? What state are you in(emissions)?

I live in michigan. My goal is to have a smooth riding, nice sounding bike. I don't have to be the fastest on the block. I know nothing about this technology. I would prefer to keep the price down but not necessarily cheap out. ? Self adjustment

Dobeck DFO/TFI is the least expensive, most basic tuner. All it does is add fuel.
For your bike that doesn't have o2 sensors, the next step up would be a Power Commander III USB, preferably from Fuel Moto as they offer lots of support.
I personally ran the Dobeck unit til I moved up the engine modification ladder and then went to the PCIII.

For just an exhaust and air filter you don't need an expensive dyno tune. Just get a PCV or Power Vision and you'll be good.

Before you tune that, install a 1/4" bolt, 1 1/2" in length, about 3" in from the end of the pipe, and stack 3-4, 5/16" nuts on it.
It'll pick up the bottom end torque loss.
