Mike, most current VW Group vehicles come with a turbo these days, gas and diesel! We have one of each. Factory installation of fully integrated turbos has become routine in the car world and there is no reason why some bikes shouldn't also have them IMHO.
You're absolutely right. It's been a trend in Europe for quite some time on tiny diesel engines. Kawasaki as well as others have or have had turbo'd motorcycles, with the current H2 race bike making in excess of 300hp. Even American manufacturers have intergrated turbo and superchargers into the hi performance and truck lines.
On motorcycles, a much smaller, more fuel efficient combo could be produced. Imagine a fully loaded touring bike with a 400cc engine cruising along getting 80mpg or more, then having well over 100hp on tap with a twist of the wrist! That would be really someting. But would it be economically viable? Compared to the current touring offerings at the current prices, yeah, I think so. Dodge has their 4 cylinder diesel pick-up that knocks down nearly 30mpg and able to tow 10,000 lbs. And the dealers can't keep 'em in stock.
