Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I have noticed a rattle coming from the cam side of the motor.
This is a 2016 FLTRU Road Glide Ultra 103 HO
On start up of the engine I hear a rattle coming from the area of the cam cover. The rattle stops within 10 to 12 seconds of the motor starting.
I presume what I'm hearing is the cam drive chain rattling inside the housing until the oil pressure rises enough to pressurize the hydraulic timing chain tensioner.
If there is any other reason for this noise I'd like to know and a corrective measures needed. Engine has about 5k on it. Yes I need to ride more.
Most likely the lifters have bled down some while sitting and created a clearance. Once oil pressure builds, they pump back up, taking up the clearance. Some do it more than others.
Corrective measures...Might be a little extreme for a bike with 5k on it. You might push for a warantee repair, but the service dept might say "They all do that." So, you'd have to push pretty hard.
You could swap out the lifters. Yours might be on the loose side internally, allowing oil to bleed off when it's not running.
