Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
2007 softail duece wanting to build on a budget and build as I go with end result being cams 107 kit and heads or head work but for now planning on staying with stock heads with cosmetic gaskets with maybe some smoothing and polishing done. Looking for just cams now and really looking at the woods cams. I ride really aggressive solo but on occasion I ride 2 up wanting to have the best of both worlds being able to rip solo but not having a dog when I slow down and ride 2 up any advise would help I'm looking from the tw222 up to the tw777 cam decisions are hard and I need stuff that'll work alone and complement the build as I go
I had a similar build with my last bike and didn't know if I could afford headwork and bigger throttle body or not. I upgraded the 96 top end to 107 with the s&s 107 kit which uses cp domed pistons to set static comp at about 10.5. I used the s&s 585 ezy start cams as I didn't have acrs and the 585 would perform well for me now and with headwork later on. I didn't get headwork done but the bike ran extremely well with lots of torque. I'd happily do it again if in the same circumstances
I agree with the 48 in a stock 96. I have them in my 96 but if he is wanting to use the cams he is buying eventually wiith a 107 kit wouldn't the CCP be too high?

Yes and that should have been mentioned in my previous. Basing cam selection on the criteria that the cam will optimize performance in a 96" motor and a 107" motor is a flawed approach. Select a cam for the particular configuration knowing that if the configuration changes the selected cam will likely need to be replaced for optimum performance. There are cams that will work in both a 96" and a 107" configuration; heck, the stock cam will work in both configurations. If the OP selects a cam that will optimize performance in a 107" configuration, performance in the 96" configuration will suffer and visa versa.
The OP can run the 48 in the 96" but replace it with a different cam if/when he goes to 107". Who knows how long it will take for the OP to actually build the 107" motor........
Doesn't matter what any vendor advertises. Increasing bore diameter from 3.750" to 3.938 will increase CCP by about 20psi which will make a huge difference in performance. Anyone expecting to install a cam for optimum performance in a 96" motor and expecting optimum performance from that same cam in a 107" motor will likely be disappointed. Select a cam for the planned displacement knowing that a different cam will very likely be required to optimize performance in a larger/smaller displacement motor. Or heads may need additional work to make them compatible with the selected cam. Either way, mo money......
