Hey guys I'm trying to tackle an issue that showed up late last season
for example -first ride of the day (cold engine) - starts and runs perfect - drive for 10 minutes and turn off the bike to do some banking or whatever -when I try to start after 2 - 3 minutes of sitting (still hot) I get this wicked crunching / grinding noise -
I then bump the start button a few quick times and it turns over and away I go
any ideas? I'm going to pull the primary cover and inspect but if anyone has any insight and can point me in the right direction that would be great
That sounds like a failing compensator. Hot kickback is a symptom. I was lucky to get 90,000 out of my 2011 RGU but the issue was resolved when the comp was replaced.
Sounds like a weak compensator. I would do the upgrade and while it's apart check the splines on the clutch hub, more often than not when I have have been replacing compensators to clutch hub splines are blown out from the kicking back
Ya Ill check the splines out - just started doing it - maybe 4 or 5 kick backs tops - been reading up on the comp seems like it happens alot on the 09's / 10's
if you happen to have a part number for the SE kit that would be helpfull -
according to the HD site the part number is 42200064a - however its specs a trike??
also do I need to replace the Rotor Assembly P/N 30041-08A for the new compensator to work properly? I will inspect but if it doesnt show any signs of wear / damage i'd like to re use it
The part you need should be part number 40100061 and it should come with the new rotor which does have to be used for it to work. Also requires separate purchase of part number 11100088, which is an adhesive kit to mount the oiler on the inside of the primary cover. If it has only kicked back a few times the clutch hub is probably fine, I normally see them damaged whe the problem has been going on for a while, but still good to check its since it will be off the bike anyways
