Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
It's time for me to replace the cam tensioners. I have an 03 Electra glide. Which is the best way to go? Do I go with gears or just get the hydraulic tensioner put in?
How many miles are on it? How many miles do plan to keep it? Any further engine mods?
If no further engine mods, my suggestion would be to replace with Cyco tensioner pads.
Gears are the best - - but only if the run out is good & you are planning on keeping it - you will need new cams & spend much more money
other wise the cyco pads

I just did my '06 Ultra with Cyco shoes and put a cam in while I was in there. Change the inner cam bearings when you do it. Added a Baisley oil relief spring and brought the oil pressure up a bit. Worked for me and I was happy
Spend the money on a set of S&S 509 cams and do what DonnieM did instead of spending money on parts you don't need to have a good running dependable motor.
Aa cost effective solution and increases performance as well. If the bike is carbed, you will probably need to rejet; I assume Stage I upgrade has been done? If not, you should do that while you are at it. If the bike is EFI, you might consider a fuel management system as well. Money better spent there than on gears or hydraulic tensioners.
My work was done a few months ago, I went gears with andrews 37 cams, new high flow oil pump, adjustable push rods and ofcourse new bearings.. major difference in power gained too.
