which is the best cam manufacturer and part number for gear drive cams to replace the original chain drive and tensioner on 2002 Ultra Classic. Looking for torque improvement at low rpm, large two up riders.
Do I also have to change intake/exhaust/carb jets?
Can only afford to do this job myself in my barn. But I like the challenge
Andrews makes the gears and the S&S 509 would be a good cam choice for an early bagger.
Yes, you will need to rejet the carb, probably go up on the main and raise the needle about .050" with some small washers made for that purpose. Depending on the mileage, you might want to replace the oil pump and or lifters. You should upgrade the inner cam bearings to B-148s and the outer cam bearings should be replaced as well. Remember a ball bearing is the preferred rear bearing with gear drive cams. You will need to decide on using the stock pushrods or adjustable; trade off between man hours and money.
If you don't have the HD service manual for your bike, you should get one. There are some "special" tools or work arounds required for this job. Google "freezer oven" method to R/R cams and bearings and the work around for the R/R of the inner cam bearings.
EDIT: Always a good idea to check run out but being an '02 model with hot forged crank and Timken left crank bearing the '02 lower unit is near bullet proof.
Using DJL's and Scott at Hillside's advice, I went with the 509 gear drive cams. Also used S&S lifters and adjustable pushrods along with those rocker locker gizmos.
Very happy with the way it runs. The gears have a nice low pitched whine and the valvetrain is much quieter than before. Noticeable bump in low rpm pulling power, and a nice lope to the idle

What Mike said. I went with the exact same setup and have had the exact same experience he has on my 05 RK.
I installed an S&S 510G gear-drive set on my 05 Softail deluxe. I heard here after the fact 509 is the perfect bolt in, low rpm torque, choice. But I'm happy with the results. I had a shop re-jet afterwards. S&S has good, thorough instructions and good tech support. Just need bolt cutters, adjustable pushrods and the special inner cam bearing tool. Maybe replace the lifters, although I didn't at 40K miles.
