Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
We've tracked down a 509 gear kit in the UK. If I bring in something from outside the EU free trade zone, it's 23% tax plus the shipping.
Gotta be a way around that. I have worked in too many countries with those ridiculous tax laws. Personal mail has worked for me in those countries. Canada has a similar duty on "international" shipments but a friend in Canada received all the parts to complete a 95" build from me in Texas and didn't pay a cent in duties. Where there is a will there is a way. In any event; good luck with the project; let us know how it goes.
I wish. Ireland has a single point of arrival for foreign post. It's a small rock, after all. 4.5 mil people here in the ROI - that's 2 million less than the Dallas Fort Worth metro area has. Though I have received some small packages from Russia/Taiwan/Lithuania/China/Hong Kong that went through normal post(and they may and have also charge duty as well), EVERYthing I have received from the States the last ten years has gone through the Portlaoise Intl mail facility(which is stuffed full of equipment from the USPS, BTW) where small dogs love all over the packages and they are X-Ray'd. The only way around it is what you've done - chance it. Declare it well below it's value(less than $50 or so worth and there is no duty) and hope no one takes notice. However, I have a feeling Canada gets more parcels from the US in a week than Ireland gets in a decade, or maybe even 50 years. So your results for chancin' will likely be more like mine - I actually had to pay $150 to take receipt of a camera sent from the USA that was MINE and declared as such, with my name as both the sender and recipient, that actually visibly looked used, and not professionally packaged. It was sent purely because it had sentimental value - otherwise I would have told the postmaster he now owns an old camera. Also - occasionally **** simply disappears there. So, do you feel lucky?
Ah, Ireland. It's like stepping back in time, and getting your boots stuck in it.
OK, got the 509's in. Mechanic confirmed something I suspected - someone had been inside the heads before and did some subtle work. Explains why she breathes well up to redline eagerly. I put in the 509G's, and pulled the heads and replaced the super thick stock head gasket with a cometic .030 or ,020, I forget. Anwho, much more lope, much much more torque, and more top as well. It's a bit louder now too. A different bike.
It's much more stoccato now with the gasket and the cam. It actually really sounds like it has higher compression. Way more torque off idle. This is how they should come from the factory!
The mechanic said it's had a valve job, and they've obviously smoothed out any rough casting in the intake. They matched it to the intake, too. So that was nice.
Now I need to upgrade the brakes!
BTW, I am on my fourth or fifth map from Fuel Moto. The last one really woke her up. It's adding a lot more fuel everywhere. Especially right off idle. This thing feel more like my buds 103 off idle now, which is fine with me. And it runs eagerly to 6K in the first 3 gears(too chicken to go to redline in 4th yet). SHe feels like redline in 5th is an option if I lose my mind(only 5 of them gears on this 05 DYna).
THE plug/play cams for an 88", are an S&S .509, or an Andrews 21.
We actually lean towards the 21, but that said, nothing wrong with the .509.

No Regrets here with the Andrews TW21 .. They were given to me by another Rider traded his Bike in, on my limited income was a big help .. Am sure might have got more power out of others but they were free, and when doing the Tensioner upgrade thought was dumb not to go ahead do Cam Bearings & Cams as well ..
