Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I'm sure this has been discussed here before. I've done searches on YouTube and can't find the exact issue I have. There is a tapping sound which is noticeable when the engine is hot. At first I thought it was a vibration from the windshield or other plastic. Not metal to metal but definitely gets faster as I Rev the engine More. Pronounced under load at high rpm.
I've checked and replaced exhaust gaskets, installed rocker lockers, checked torque on nearly everything.
No leaks, no loss of power. Just annoying I guess as I tend to think something is wrong with the engine. I our chased this bike with 85k miles on it and was told the motor was redone. From the looks of the internals and fresh gaskets there's no reason for me not to believe it.
The sound is not coming up on video.
Anyone have this same noise.
My best description of it is like a peice of plastic vibrating against another peice.
I had an extremely annoying tap/knock/ noise. Turned out its my clutch basket The fingers on the clutch basket have grooves worn into them from the ears on the clutch plates. I have not installed my new clutch set up yet. But Hopefully that takes care of the problem. I went thru and adjusted my push rood and changed lifters and put in rocker lockers and everything and none of it made the noise go away till finally I started the bike with the primary cover off and it was louder, so I jsut guess it had to be that so I removed the whole clutch set up. Put it on the bench and tore into it.
Sheet watching countless videos today I think I noticed that it is just regular valve train noise. Every video I watched with problems sounded way worse than what I have. No biggie.
We can't easily hear or diagnose noises in here! Better to find a local indy who can see and **** an ear at your bike and offer suggestions. He should be able, for example, to diagnose if Scott's suggestion of lifters is right.
The Evo valve trains are known to be a bit pronounced especially around 2800 rpm on a lite tip in on the throttle... Rocker Lockers will not make any change in an evo... However adjustable pushrods will. Setting them to .140".... Evo's tick to a certain degree..... Not an issue...
So I feel like a dumbass. I've been worrying about ticking and tapping around the engine. I have been on this forum, face book and friends.
I have tracked a few of my noises.
1. Tapping sound increasing frequency with engine rpm. = air cleaner cover missing gasket Sounded like plastic tapping.
2. Ticking associated with rpm. =Fuel door opens up. Needs new lock or modify the catch.
3. Metal rattle. =shifter linkage, missing bearing on brake lever
4. Plastic rattle. = loose saddle bags
5. Click, clack, bang, bump = normal 82k miles harley noise
I just feel more at ease now that I don't fear the engine blowing up
