I have a 91 Softail with a 110 Revtech engine. I bought it that way. Rode it three times (fabulous) then parked it for the winter. Tried to start this spring. Would not turn past compression. Removed both plugs to check compression. 130 each. Replaced the front plug and it turns over no problem with rear plug out. It actually started like that. Replaced the rear plug and removed front plug. Starter won’t turn it past compression. Battery is new and strong. I installed a new stronger starter assuming it would solve the problem. NOPE. Same thing. With both plugs installed starter won’t turn it past compression. It moves the crank but not past compression. HELP!
it doesn't have little blue compression release buttons in the heads? most of those that i have seen came with them. little blue button that you push down before cranking the engine, usually right next to the spak plug, but could be in betweeen the pushtrod tubes too.
Everything pointed to a bad starter. Got a brand new battery and same problem. Installed a brand new starter, big job, got it all back together and........same thing! Tried jumper cables from my truck battery. Same thing. Then I was thinking that maybe the NEW battery was defective and shorting out the truck jump. So I disconnected the new battery and jumped it again. BINGO! It turned over just fine. All this BS because of a defective battery. I confirmed it by putting a volt meter on the new battery and saw the voltage drop from 13.2v down to 5v when the starter is engaged.
No, it does not have compression releases. Compression is 130 each cylinder.
Just wondering what kind of battery so I can cross that one off my list?
Whoa there! A new battery isn't guaranteed to be fully charged, no matter what it says on the packaging. Before installing a new battery, especially on a big motor like mrtom's, it should be fully charged off the bike. His problems could be as simple as that - trying to start with a part-charged new battery.
