There are 2 ways to check the engine light on 2000 tc88 carbed bikes. One is hold down the odometer switch while turning the ignition on and checking codes there. The other is using a jumper wire between the 1 and 2 holes in the connector under the seat and turning ignition on. The latter one will make the engine light flash codes similar to older cars. Your service manual has directions for both. My problem ended up being the MAP sensor which is on top of the intake manifold.

Hi I have now checked everything except the manifold pressure sensor and I now think that is what it is ? my only doubt is that there is no codes coming up . I even though it might the air filter effecting the manifold pressure .I have change the plugs and plug leads . It comes on when I first start up and stays on for about 5 min and then goes off which makes me think it is temperature related ????
Normal procedure is ignition switch on and wait until the engine light goes out before cranking then after the start on my 2009 it would come back on if I didn't clear the old codes it threw when it had the issue, but it only stays on for several seconds not several minutes like you explain. IHNI but maybe it just needs cleared by the dealer. Seems like I've heard something like that before on those early ECM models. Good luck with your problem
The engine light will come on for a few seconds after start if it's "holding" a code, it will do this even after fault is fixed. It will stay for 50 "starting cycles". If it stays on as you mentioned, you still have a fault. Did you try the try the jumper wire method of testing? That was the only way I got mine to show the MAP sensor fault

Hi Thanks for your reply . Firstly there are no fault codes coming up and i have been assured if it was the MAP sensor it would show as a fault .I did a ride of nearly 300klm on Tuesday and the light went out after about 5min of ridding (running temperature) and stayed of until i had done about 200 klm and this was while i was on a freeway doing 120klm/hr (75 mph) and there was a slight difference in the motor ,it felt like a multi cylinder engine loosing one cylinder ?? Not like a plug or lead on a twin cylinder ?
