Can anyone help me identify this engine?
I really have no frame of reference for what is good or crap/b.s. on these engines.
Is the air cleaner on it something gimmicky or silly?
EDIT: Also - what are good places to buy parts and gear, if someone would be so kind as to make recommendations. I've got a helmet on the way from RevZilla, and they and J&P Cycles seem to be the ones at the top (or paying to be top) of Google search results.
Fas as what in the engine unless dad or someone who was around buddy wise can fill you in it's all guess work till you open it up.
Good luck.
I like Dennis Kirk over JP. Always fast shipping and if any problems, they take care of it fast. It seems they try to keep quality aftermarket parts available. Some of the more specific parts are a little tougher to find, but you can. I suggest you get your hands on a parts manual for your bike. When you have a specific harley part that you need, having the part number to search online is a big help.
You have a little bit of a challenge with regards to the top end. Trying to identify some of those parts will be a challenge at first, but keep notes when you do figure it out so ordering parts won't be so tough.
I posted that pdf thinking it was a 1340 screamin eagle head, so now I am not so sure. Your cylinder part number from what I can read and doing a quick google search is for a twin cam 88 inch. YD
I'm incredibly shamed to admit, I'm such a novice that I had been attempting to start the thing with the petcock in the off position. (At least that's consistent with my belief that fuel wasn't sparking, and therefore it needed plugs... )
However, when I figured the petcock out, I turned it to on - still didn't get it to start, and began smelling fuel. Looked at the floor of my garage to see the gallon of gas I had put in the bike coming out the bottom. Likely just going to start by replacing every hose/line I can reasonably replace, and see what that gets me, but as I do so I think I'll also take as much apart and clean the crap out of what I can.
I always did enjoy taking things apart though...
EDIT: Ok, I'm learning, maybe... Not a leak, rather, the minute I open the fuel tank, it just pours out the carburetor overflow tube. Off to learn about carburetors...

Also, replace all the fuel lines, they start to deteriorate when they are old, and little bits of the hose get into the carb.
You can find some good information on CV carbs here:

The screws on this carb are not standard phillips, this screwdriver will cause you less headaches when removing the float bowl, this is the tool for JIS type screws:

Yup - that's the task for today, got the air cleaner off this morning before starting work, and hopefully will get it cleaned up this evening. If I'm really lucky, maybe I'll actually manage to get it to start before the end of the day.
Think I'll order a different air cleaner while I'm at it, not only is consensus that the one on it is silly, but it's really in the way of my knee and irritates the crap out of me.

The plugs weren't pretty when I pulled them, so I guess I'll order some and try that next.
