Can anyone help me identify this engine?

Ouch! That's gonna be a bitch to fix. I've been there before. My fix was drilling the WHOLE thing out to 27/32" and tapping it for 1/2" x 13 and installing an aluminum bolt (JB welded in place), and then tapping it for a new stud.

If you've ever actually removed an exhaust stud you'd know it's damn near impossible to get out, especially if there's no threads to double-nut onto for leverage.

Looks like the head is gonna have to come off. The right down tube is in the way.. Might as well take it to a machine shop and have them do it right.....

By the way your "Gremlin Bell" should be mounted at the lowest place on the bike, usually the bottom frame rails....

Yeah, giving myself basically one attempt to get the stud out myself, and then it's machine shop time. Nearly there on getting the head off.

I didn't know what that bell was, thanks for chiming in on it.

Couple places make a drill jig just for that job but by the time you buy it and all the bs a novice will go through having a shop do it is the easiest route , sucks man.

It does.

Worst part is if I can't get it out myself, I don't know how long I'll have to wait for machine shops near me to be open again. (I'm assuming they're shut, as non-essential, and even if not, they probably aren't just taking walk-ins.)

The weather is amazing here right now too. I just want to ride the damn thing!

Unless you are have decent experience with broken bolts, a damned steady hand and good eye with a drill, this is one of those jobs that can get into trouble pretty quick and it takes access to some pricey items like carbide drill bits and extractors.

Just a tip, chase the threads on the other studs to clean them and use nickel anti seize when you go back together with stainless nuts, seriously reduces the chance of a repeat of this.

Heed the warnings of others, don't do it yourself.

Just wait it out till you can get it to a machine shop. You can find plenty of other things on the bike to work on in the mean time.

One broken drill bit and your forked....

There are "EZ out" kits that you can pick up. Basically you drill a small hole in the center of the bolt/stud, then thread in a reverse thread bit into the hole. Otherwise if you are EXTREMELY careful it's possible get a drill bit that is the size of the shaft of the bold but smaller than the threads and slowly and VERY carefully drill it out. I've done it before but it's not for the faint of heart.

You could always call the Machine Shop and see if they can help you out with it right quick. Piece of cake job for them. Most repair places are considered essential and a regular mechanic could probably do it for you too.

My attempt failed, probably partly because I'm too squeamish to really go at it.

Was texting with a buddy, and he made a good point about trying and going ahead and calling a shop, as they might be open and pretty low on work considering the current situation. I wouldn't feel too terrible about paying someone that might be short on work to do it with all that's going on.

I'll probably try calling around a little on Monday, and see if I can save myself weeks of frustrated waiting.

Has anyone replying to this thread ever actually seen a machine shop successfully pull a broken exhaust stud in a Harley head?
