Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
If there is an automotive engine shop in your area, that would be the first call, as they'll have the fixturing to set it up quickly and accurately.
A regular machine shop can do it, but will be more work.
Local bike shop about 5 min from the house took it yesterday and expects to get to it sometime this week.
Talking to the guy I dropped it with, it's definitely something he's done before and had success at. He's going to start by trying to weld to it, if that doesn't work, he's going to try using the exhaust drill jig he's got (I think this: Exhaust Stud Drill Plate).
If that fails, then we're looking at the time consuming process of positioning the head and holding it in place for more serious equipment. Fingers crossed guys...
Shop got the stud out. New one is in, the head is back on the bike. I've got everything back together, new Arlen Ness Big Sucker on it instead of the Hypercharger, brand new spark plugs, brand new battery.
It won't start still. I'm not sure if I don't know what I'm doing, or if there's actually something wrong.
I have it on full choke, I've got fuel open to Res (it's only got about 3/4th of a gallon of gas in it and I wanted to be sure), I put the key in (and turn it on), have it in neutral, pull the clutch in, and push the start button. It cranks, and cranks, but nothing.
Any tips or something stupid I'm not doing? Or something I'm doing wrong?
Honestly put a little more fuel in it pull the fuel line off of carburetor. Make sure your getting fuel flow to the carburetor. If all that looks good then pull a spark plug and see if you're getting any spark.. If you still have the original petcock on the fuel tank it requires vacuum to allow fuel to the carburetor sometimes I can be a hindrance on a dry start... You can always like squirt a little fuel right directly into the carburetor too as you're cranking over just to see if it will fire..

Thanks, at least that confirms I'm not missing some secret Harley starting step (or something obvious like, hey, you never put the key in and turned it on level obvious).
More gas, verify the gas is actually getting into the engine. If all that checks, verify I'm actually getting spark. Here goes...
Hotrod has good advice. YouTube "how to check for spark on a motorcycle". Good stuff there. You do have the switch set to "run" on the handlebar right?

I know it's a little too late now cuz you said you got the motor back together but I hope you use the .030" head gasket from Cometic, It gives it a little more chunk to the comp...
