Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I'm going to install a 468 in my 107 m8 this winter. 2019 sg Feb 19 build date. I did a quick search and found some older threads..but
If i wanted to update to the latest harley pump do I just need to get the pump with the seal ? Or do I need to also get a new cam plate?
I have read many folks are not having issues doing some engine work with stock oil pump.
Previously I was going to go with the s&s pump...but 33k miles later I haven't had any issues...then i read some have had over oiling issues with the s&s ?
Just trying to figure out if I should drop 600 on a pump or if its just a waste for me. dealer said 150 for the lattst pump but they weren't clear about the cam plate.
Had the S&S pump and plate on my 18 without issue. The new S&S pumps have the seal so as log as your crank runout is good the S&S would be a great choice. Honestly though for the cost, the 2020 HD pump is a fantastic choice as well... especially for a cam only upgrade.
The 2020 HD pump will work with the older cam plate, but I'd verify that with your parts dept first.
Here's an excellent vid showing the difference between the 2020 HD pump along with the latest offerings from S&S and Fueling.
We have yet to use ANY fancy red, or blue pump or plates, on any of the multitudes of the M8 cam install/tunes here, contrary to popular beliefs.
T/C's.......maybe 10 in last twenty years......all upon customer request, unless damaged, and then a Daytona pump.
Reminds me of the "unleaded seat conversion" valve jobs of yesteryear.

Unless really pushing the envelope on compression and TQ/HP, the OEM pump, TC or M8 is quite adequate and most of the builds seen on this forum don't fall into that category. Not dissing the aftermarket hardware; all good stuff and the bronze, blue and red cam plates are really pretty but the money can be spent on other things that may not be as pretty but will increase performance.
Yes. Like what is the perceived benefit? Curious how this all got started. Why do you think you need that oil pump and cam plate?
Ok..that makes sense. maybe i shoukd ask myself that. I think in the earley stages of the m8 the oem pump was questionable to start with. But now it seems thats not an issue?
