Did you use red loctite? Some do.

Just got done re-checking and they were still tight. I have the back lifted up and was turning the engine with the tire and can still hear a clunk even with the rods loose.

Is it the holes to the softail balancer tensioners or the holes for hydraulic cam chain tensioners? IIRC it's about 1/4" and takes a self taping screw. Cover plates sound like cam chain tensioners.

Got the noise figured out. The bolt to the outer cam gear was coming loose. Still having problems with the speedometer needle and engine light coming on and off. Thanks for all the help so far.
