Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Hi all.
so I just can't seem to find where I'm getting noise.
This is a fresh build, engine now broken in and it's so noisy
To describe it, sounds like , when u put a stack of money in a money counting machine with a slight tick too.
Happens most at lower gear 2000 to 3000rpm and quiets out when I shift to higher gear and either below 2000rpm or above 3000.
I've switched out pushrods to solid ones
I've double, triple and quadruple checked clearances
I've had crank redone with s&s pin, pro plugged and welded
rocker boxed grinded to ensure over 50thou clearance for springs
pistons to valve clearance was over 100thou
Had the cases on cam side ground down for cam clearance
s&s lifters
I'm completely baffled
I've taken this engine apart couple times to find issues and there's nothing I can see that would cause this
I have a daytona twin tec module
98" build
Woods tw6h cams
Can this be a case of ...you got a noisy engine?
Only thing that wasn't replaced were the rockers and rocker assembly as they appeared to be in good shape
Frustrating a lot of hard work, research , advice from you guys on here and doing everything proper way.
Anyways...anyone got any ideas , I more that appreciate your thoughts
From what you are describing as far as the noise and the RPM's where it is most pronounced I am guessing too much rocker shaft to arm clearance. Check out rocker lockers. They may help.
Have a look around my website, might be just what you need.

It's likely the 6Hs but early tensioners or loose cam gears can make the noise worse.
You can try and bottom out the lifter and back off 1/4 turn.
I don't have adjustable
I put in solids. I know those cams have a hard ramp
I've heard some engines not often but some are just noise makers
I'm hoping that's the case here
