I ran into a problem installing my 551 S&S cams . The motor is an 05 so the ball bearing in the cam support plate gets pressed in and then the front cam is pressed into the ball bearing . The new cam just slides into the ball bearing loosely with no press at all . I measured the end of the new cam and it is .003" smaller than the cam I took out . Has anybody ever run into this with these cams ?

That's because after '07 there isn't an outer cam bearing. Only inner and the cams just slide in on both ends. You're fine.
'05 motor, cams ride in outer cam bearings and bearings are a press fit on the cam nose; haven't done hundreds but have done a few and never saw a bearing that wasn't a press fit onto the cam nose. I use the oven/freezer method to install cam bearings on the cams and, in that condition, the bearings will drop on the cams but will usually tighten up befor full seating and require a deep well socket and a tap to seat. Several time have seen the bearings fall out of the cam plate which can be addressed by "peening" the inside bearing seat and applying a bit of green (bearing retention) Loctite.
There's a difference between loosely and not needing to press them in, yes.
I assumed he had the right cams and was concerned with not having to press them in. The older cams use the older style chain too and wouldn't work with the newer style.
