Issues with M 8 engine.
I've recently purchased my first Softail Heritage with M8 engine and quickly hearing of issues of cavitation in the engine oil .
I've been researching ways of rectifying problem, what I've found so far is cavitation is caused by the crank balancer etc... I'm hearing of fittings and filters being used and fitted to transmission cover .
I also read the case must still maintain a vacuum to remove cavitation bubbles but must still release too much excess case positive pressure to stop blow-by .
Adding a PCV valve and or small pod filter or catch can to transmission cover seems a good idea.
I also want to address rocker boxes venting back into throttle body sending crap straight back into the engine causing issues further down the road .
My bike only has 5000 kmls on the clock so I want to do the right thing for my hog.
My question is how much negative pressure or vacuum must still be maintained if PCV valve is added and are PCV valves rated for certain pressures?
If so, can anyone advise me of the correct path to take and the right parts to use to avoid making a problem worse.
Cheers,
Jack.
There is a retro-fit vent kit to for primary cover to prevent "oil migration" if that`s what you mean by cavitation , I do not believe any sort of of PVC or catch can is required
There are 1000`s of posts on alternate path for breathers , some elect to fit a catch can others simply vent to atmosphere. Again a PVC is not required
"Sumping " is a different issue and not to be confused with oil migration
You are over thinking things; ride the bike, follow the owners manual and enjoy. If/when you actually have any issues come back for a visit and I am sure you will get the assistance you need. Ride on!
