Default Loctite question

Hi everyone!

Hope you US riders over there are doing fine.

Here in northern Europe spring is approaching and within a month most bikes will be on the road again.

Now to my question:

As I am about to replace the stock cam on my Dyna -06, I ordered "red loctite" to the crank and cam sprockets. After opening the package I discovered that the loctite is not red but in fact green.

Asking the seller he claims that the red loctite 262 (which I would have been comfortable with) has been replaced with the green loctitite 2701.

My question here is: Can I safely use 2701 on my cam and crank sprockets instead of 262? I am likely to unscrew them again not so far in the future.

Tips and advices are much appreciated.

Best Regards
Oak Mountain Rider

Haven’t used that particular number but some grades of the green are considered permanent, need heat and correct tools to remove.

Looks like not only is it permanent like green 620 that I’ve used, but fluoresces under UV for quality control and inspection.

Red 262 - tds.henkel.com/tds5/Studio/ShowPDF/?pid=262&format=MTR&subformat=REAC&language=EN&pla nt=WERCS
Green 2701 - 243 NEW-EN (henkel.com)

Both described for permanent locking. Both require the same amount of heat to break the bond.

A couple of years ago an engineering company recommended using 2701 albeit on a different job.

Read the label on what its function is. Most red loctite products were industrial use. All mine are red.

Seen the same spec in AutoZone on one that is green. I also use loctite primer.

do not use green loctite (any # green loctite) on any bolt or screw, its basicly designed for sleeve retaining.use red on permenant bolts & blue on stuff that may be taken back apart from time to time (this is especially on the crank bolt, never use green on that & even use red sparingly on it too)

Loctite 262 has not been replaced, the seller probably just doesn’t want to do an exchange. The green loctite products I do believe are permanent. The red is just medium/ high strength.

I would 100% not use the green and just go pickup some 262 or 263 locally if you can. Most any auto parts or hardware store should carry it.

LOCTITE 262 is designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners.

LOCTITE 2701 is designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners.

I can get the red 262 loose with heat. The green, never tried, and hope I don’t need to.
