I was doing a valve adjustment when...
I need some advice. So I got my first Harley and watching youtube to see how to get my shovelhead street ready. It has been sitting in a garage since 2006 and I dont know what has/has not been done to it. Anyway, I was watching youtube and as I removed the pushrod cover I saw that the front pushrod, that is the one closest to the front end forks, is not aligned with the hydraulic unit that it is seated on. Acctually it is the hydraulic unit that is not aligned properly. It looks like it is seated wrong or someting like that.
The other three pushrods are aligned perfectly, but this first one is not. So, my first major engine issue and Im not sure how to handle it. Is it a matter of just replacing the hydraulic unit, tappet and roller assembly? If so, can I just buy a tappet kit or should I do a little more investigating?? I decided to investigate more but I cant get the tappet guides off the gearcase. The service manual says to insert thumb and forefinger in the two fricking guide holes but I can barely fit my pinky. So my question is why would the tappet be crooked? After pulling out the hydraulic unit, I noticed metal shavings on the tappet guide underneath the pushrod gasket. I think the bike was being ridden like that and looks like the hydraulic unit has been rubbing against the tappet guide wall, hence the metal shavings. At least thats what I think and what I know for sure is that I dont want to ride my bike like that unless it is normal practice.
So can anyone give me some advice? Should I remove the tappet guide and look deeper into this problem? if so what should I look for? Or should I just replace the whole tappet guide assembly and hope for the best??
thanks in advance.
i had a 1974 model super glide. they are comfortable but in stock form, not a barn stormer for sure.
however, they respond well to mod's but the heads are the weakest link. with tweaks to tranny ratio, it will sing soprano.
funny story where i smoked a beemer 900rs, probably still shaking his head to this day>
IIRC: Tappet blocks came in both iron & aluminum, which do you have ?
