My first choice is the gear drive conversion which is contingent on the runout. If run out is good, my inclination is to go with that. But after reading and watching YouTube videos on the subject they also identified that stock flywheels can shift over time.

So, it's looking increasingly like the Hydraulic conversion might be the only alternative.

Which Hydraulic kits have the support for the crank like I have seen on some kits?

Thanks for the help, guys.

There are a few ways to do the conversion, The HD way with the early cams reused in a Hybrid setup OR use what is called Conversion Cams and then all the late model TC camchest components. The conversion cams replaced the original cam with a cam set that allows you to use all the late model HD hydraulic items with the larger cam bearing surface and the better oil pump. One of the many advantages to this method it your get rid of all the problem areas of the original and replace it will the late TC parts that can be found anywhere. With the hybrid setup your stuck with special parts that you can only get from SE and if they quit making it your SOL (which is common when they get older). here is a link to the parts you need to do it using the conversion cam way http://www.mastertune.net/products_camshafts.html. All the parts are listed at the bottom of the page

I did gear, have timken bearing. But hydraulic wasn't around yet. I'd probably due hydraulic cause don't have to check runout.

Thanks Rounders & Steve Cole for the replies,

Sounds like of the two the one that completely upgrades to current TC specs is the way to go.

Only drawback I see to upgrading to later 07-up style hydraulic cam chest components in 99-06 TC, besides 99-00 cam position sensor trigger, is that some cam choices are not available in a conversion option.
Two ways to overcome that problem but takes a good machine shop and a few $$

But looking towards the future I wish to try to eliminate this issue all together.

(1). As far as I understand the gear driven conversion is the best. But that is contingent on the runout. If its .001 were good but more it might not be an option.

That means a Hydraulic conversion. I will do all the upgrades, new oil pump and rotor, completely new plate and all components and most likely a cam. A complete and comprehensive update/upgrade.

(2). Experienced Wrenches Plese Throw In: Which kit is the superior kit? Fueling, S&S or who? I'm ok with expensive as long as it's the best, is complete and has everything.

(3). If I have the money down the road, I was thinking about the Harley Davidson Engine Upgrade plan and upgrading to a 103". I have a friend who is a service writer for an HD here in Miami and I am going to ask for a complete estimate of the cost. But are these new engines still plagued with cam tension issues?

I really love this bike. I'd really love to keep this bike, but this cam chain issue may be the reason I don't unless I can remedy it and have the bike completely reliable.

Any wisdom here is greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

miaminice
When I did my 01 RG I looked into the different options. I went with the stock set up but used CYCO shoes and put 30K problem free miles on them before I wrecked that bike. I almost wish I would have bought it back from insurance for several reasons one being so I could check those shoes and see how they wore!

What did you pay for this bike and what is the mileage?

seems easier to just buy a 103 out of the gate and avoid the hassle and cost of all these updates (?) 103 would also have come with the upgraded cam plate so the tensioner issue would be non-existent.
