Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Helping a friend with 84 sporty, been sitting for quite a while, went to crank over and yee haw oil spewing out of carb, sounds like a top end rebuild to me, maybe whole motor rebuild to be safe???
Not sure on how long it sat, probably a few years, was also told sluggish when it was riden, the oil just gushed out of the carb. Will get more info on how long it sat. going thru the service manual got the impression that the non cv is troublesome when it has sat for more than a year, wasn't even started to let run
engine badly sumped. might have to pull the oil pump to drain it. i think by 84, hd did away with the plug on the flywheel case but if it is there, treat it with caution, seen some guys totally screw up some cases.
to pump that much oil with just the started will be hard on it, so go SLOW and allow plenty of time for it to cool!
Oil not coming out through the intake of the carb, coming from breather, clogged return line????
The harley is a dry sump engine.
It's as previously mentioned. Oil has leaked into the crankcase from the oil tank. By design, the crankcase does not store any oil in it like jap (we sump engine) bikes. When oil leaks past a check ball in the oil pump (from sitting any length of time) it drains into the crank case where it has no room, so when starting, it pukes oil out the breather hose. Totally normal. Played this game every spring with my sporty.
Just makes a mess and you need to replace the oil that was puked out. Often, newbies will check the oil level before starting, notice that the oil is really low in the oil tank, add more oil, then start bike. It then pukes all that excess oil (along with the original sumped oil) out, making a mess.
