Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
sludge like that is not entirely a vent issue.
the biggest issue with the hd system is lazy flow and the second coalescing power.
a lot believe oil level is to blame, BUT really???
hd recognizes that engines with the sump lower than the engine under certain conditions with the vent stand pipe covered will vapor lock reducing oil movement and hence pooling in the flywheel area. it is not a concern with higher than sump tanks.
Dan, any idea what they look like now? Mileage? Less/same/more build-up? Hearing some people say that doing the bypass makes no difference on the piston build-up seems odd to me. Please go buy an expensive borescope, take pics, and report back, lol......

I haven`t so much as pulled a spark plug since the engine was reassembled (about 10,000 miles ago), but before the bypass the intake area always had a pretty noticeable amount of oil, now that area is clean.
If the big brown truck ever brings me a borescope I will take a look.
Here are the pics of my 1200 mile 114 pistons at teardown for the 128 kit.
I was initially appalled, I was not sure if it was the breathers, or the tune.
To be fair, the "tune" was a crappy SE canned tune for a 117 CVO that the dealer programmed for the aftermarket cam, exhaust, and intake with 1 mile on the odo. I fell for it, thinking I would be happy.
