Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Now that I have confirmed that the tensioners are ok, my plan is to open up the rocker covers but rather than chasing something Im not sure of, I'm wondering if anyone is in the Hartford area who is good at identifying what might be causing an odd sound that doesn't seem right. I tried the screwdriver on the engine areas and at my ear, but still can't narrow down the location/source of the noise. Im hoping I can find someone who is experienced with twin cams and might be able to point me in the right direction.
Two friends with Harleys listened to it and think it might be something that should be checked but they have experience with twin cams and no idea what the noise is.
I did the cam chain tensioners last fall and finally got a longer ride in today. I'm concerned that there is more noise from the cam box and wondering if Cyco pads are noisier than OEM ?
Not sure what is causing the extra noise there so looking for advice.
I was getting close to tearing everything open again, but borrowed a stethoscope to listen to see if I could pick up what the noise was. Turns out it was the exhaust gasket nuts were not tight enough. I tightened them to spec according to the manual when I replaced the tensioners, so either the torque wrench isn't accurate or you need to run the bike for a bit and then retorque them. I snugged them down and everything seems good now.
