Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I have almost 20k on my bike and a stage 4 kit and i keep seeing a good interval for lifters is 25k, less with aggresive cams. I needed new tires so i told the indy to throw a set of lifters in. He also recommended changing the tensioners. I declined since theyre supposed to be way better than the old spring loaded ones. He calls today, says they pulled the cam chest cover and they need changed. Im not even getting into price, but is the guy padding the bill or is this a legitimate concern at this mileage? I dont use mechanics often because ive been screwed by quite a few and im kind of wondering if this shop should have just lost my trust or if this is a good call by them.
If it was open I would change lifters, so you can forget about them. Id probably do bearings and pad and not open it for a very long time. Especially if you have to pay for labor.
Not saying they need it. But he will have to remove pads and lifters to get cams out anyways. IMO, they should be replaced 50-70k. I have heard of lifters going sooner, though not normal.
You replace them and you can close it up for years.

it went in to get the lifters changed. Im asking was it prudent to check the tensioners too
I did a cam swap on the FXDL at 28k miles, the tensioners looked like they had another 100k miles to go but I replaced them with a set of S&S tensioners as they seemed to be a better quality then the OEM's.
