Default erratic start

my bike( 07 street glide) always starts but some times when I start it the motor sounds like it will break apart, very loud banging and not firing. I stop right away then start again after a few seconds then it starts fine, any body know what that could be?

First thing is to check the battery connections for tightness and clean connections.

Possibly the solenoid is not engaging the starter gear completely. Or disengaging it completely. I'd start here.

Could be that the starter motor bushings are worn. You have to tear down the primary part way to remove the engagement fork for the drive gear, then the starter will slide out.

Always disconnect the battery when working on these areas.

Hope some of this helps?

I checked my battery terminals and they were a little loose so I tightened them up. Hope that is the solution, thanks for the tip.
