Default 03 Springer bendix gear won't disengage

Got an 03 Springer that the starter gear is shooting forward to engage, but then doesn't disengage. The motor stop when letting go of the button, but the gear doesn't pull back. Is this a good sign of needing to replace the bendix needs to be replaced...or the whole starter?

Are you having problems with the starter?

How are you determining that the pinion gear does not disengage?

Starter is working just fine (or was up until about 3 weeks ago). It is all OE equipment (no mods). Owner took to dealer and they diagnosed starter. But when I hit the button it didn't sound like starter to me. So...I did a little searching and found a forum here that talked about the bendix (pinion) gear could be an issue. Pulled the primary cover and saw the gear was still engaged. Pushed on it a bit and it pops back in place. Next time the button is pressed it thrusts forward (as expected) but then doesn't retract. Just stays on the flywheel. Bike will actually start after a few attempts. Sounds aweful getting it there but seems to run fine afterwards.

Sounds like your starter clutch. If it is making awful noises when you press the button it is most likely that is worn and in need of replacement. You can buy a new one from a dealer or any Harley custom shop, even Ebay.

You said the problem was that the pinion gear was remaining engaged to the ring gear. That would have nothing to do with the starter clutch.

Well finally got a chance to pull the rest of the bike apart to get out the starter. All gears look fine. Bench tested the Starter and pretty sure that is the culprit here. Just hate the price tag that come with it.

They are widely available on the aftermarket, just look around! I bought my new one on Ebay.

Take the starter to a starter/alternator shop and have it rebuilt.

Not returning is usually due to a gummed up shaft.
