Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Posted this in the exhaust section on accident, but here goes...
Trying to plan out a build on my Fat Bob. Really impressed with what I have seen of the 57h cams, but have not seen any results with full on headwork? It seems they are mostly bolt in for stock heads. I will have full stage 2 headwork from WFOLarry, so I'm questioning if this is the right cam. Not looking for the "biggest" number but I want good power and a nice broad torque/power curve that carries out a good ways.
If this cam doesn't fit the bill, I will likely go with the S&S 570

Both are good choices and both like compression. Run it by Larry and follow his advice. He has seen all variations and will not steer you wrong.
Usually, if you are doing headwork you are raising compression too with thinner head gaskets and maybe shaving the heads a little so bolt in type cams with earlier intake closing may not be the best choice because the corrected compression will get too high. If you are planning on raising the compression some I think the 570s would be better or maybe the Andrews 54. For sure Larry will be your best advisor.
we`ve had guts use 57`s with our street port headwork with very good results, but not with our stage II or III headwork (lots of builds with 570`s with II or III headwork though)
Not that light, I have 585s in my FXDX. The Fat Bob will be the bike I use for 2up most of the time, so I want a broader curve.
Got a reply from him, looks like I'm gonna go with the 570. The 57 will be a great ride-able cam but doesn't need so much head work to perform. the 54 will be soft on the bottom compared to the 570
