$1000 isn't too much for head work IMO. But, it depends on what all is being done. Are they also going to high quality / high lift springs?? Are they only porting and polishing? Or reshaping them as well? Putting in bigger valves.... etc.

I'm paying $1,250 for head work, but the builder is not only polishing, but reshaping the chambers, using the best Wood's springs on the market, and one of the best, if not the best in the business (IMO)..... and he gives a before and after flow sheet of every set of heads he does.....

No disrespect to you or your builder but $1250 is a bit OTT for a good set of heads. There are two sponsors to this forum that can provide a top shelf set of heads for south of $1000. Pretty sure that they can get the same springs Mr. Woods uses as well and, almost forgot, they also provide a flow sheet.

I just had my heads done by Hillside (who have a great rep on many sites) shipped them from half way across the country and back and it wasn't even close to $1250. No offense but that's too much money for the work.

Probably true, but I have had horror stories with ordering one part from this guy, a different part from somewhere else, and having a 3rd person install them. If anything goes wrong - often everyone wants to finger point..... The installer blames parts, the parts blame the builder, etc..... Having the one builder do it all eliminates that headache....

2nd reason is he if 15 minutes from the house - easy and convenient.
3rd - he is super nice, easy to contact, and just a real easy person to talk to - not condescending or arrogant like many motor builders.

lastly, and probably the main reason for going to him to begin with - he wins every horsepower competition he enters

CHL is from Houston, so I suspect Wolfgang is doing the headwork. I know Wolfgang has the rep as the "real deal" as a porter and builder but still think $1250 is too much for head work. Must be something proprietary with Wolfgang; maybe top secret.

Nothing top secret, that is his everyday everybody rate. He does every set of heads himself - no CNC machine stuff..... he spends 20+ hours on each set of heads and he uses best quality parts on everything (not just heads, anything he puts in any motor is top quality).... his labor charge is pretty fair I think.....

I'm looking forward to the build.... I didn't want to spend a bunch of money, but I want a bunch of power - can't have it both ways :-) So I bit the bullet, and started spending money.....

He is doing a set of heads now.... after that I'm going to take him a set of cylinders to bore out.... then probably buy an S&S Crankshaft, etc.....

after I get all the parts, then I'll him swap everything over.... Gonna take a while to save up and get it piece by piece - but I think it'll be worth it.....

The "top secret" comment was tongue in cheek; not intended to be taken seriously which is why the "wink". Maybe I should have ended with a "wink wink"?

Please post a dyno sheet when you get around to tuning; very interested in seeing how all this turns out.

I guess it all depends on how much power CHL is looking for. for a stage II setup with 1.900/1.610 valves that's too much money period. but if its big stage IV work 2.050/ 1.630 valves and setup correctly, it can vary just looking at some of the shops prices around the $ 1500.00 mark.
