Current opinion concerning exhaust systems for FXR's
The last forum discussion that I can find is from several years ago. I'm planing on rebuilding a FXR and would like to hear what people think concerning what they feel is the best system/systems currently on the market. I'm leaning towards a 2 into 1 system, but I'm open. The engine will have Screamin Eagle heads for sure, but I'm not sure what else should be done to the engine. Carburator could remain stock or a S&S E carb. I'm looking for a performance system that will not cause my ears to bleed, I had a Rinehart 2 into 2 system on my FXDL and it got to the point I couldn't stand them anymore. Most of the major systems run around the same price so I'm not concerned spending around the $700 mark. I did notice in a comparison video that included a Thunderheader that it would back fire where the others in the video did not. As a side note I will be running saddle bags, if it even makes any difference. Please give me the "why" you like what you have and the reason why you would purchase them again. Thanks ahead of time for your input.
Thunderheaders, while being a well designed and good perfoming pipe, are cheaply constructed and tend to crack and have problems for a lot of people.
The company is difficult to deal with on a good day....
That having been said, you are on the right track, wanting to go with a 2-1 system.
I personally would recommend a Bassani Road Rage.
Here in the UK loud pipes attract too much attention and several of the popular US brands are renowned for being loud! I have SuperTrapp on my Glide below which despite using all the baffles it came with is civilised, using the closed end cap, so that is my recommendation.
I have had a thunderheader 2-1, supertrapp 2-1, kerker supermeg 2-1, and rush 2-1. For me the fit and finish of the thunderheader isn'[t great. They sound good but for my evo I am running the kerker supermeg by supertrapp. I vote for the basani or supertrapp
supertrapp is definitely #1 for performance but sounds like shyt on a Harley. so ill stick with the thunderheader. if they ever make a supertrapp that sounds like a TH ill buy one.
I think the 2-1 thunder headers look like crap and sound even worse. My favourite that I run are a set of 2-2 Stainless Supertrapps. Fantastic sound and tun ability
