Kee's

Thanks for your bikes specs ... looks as though there are quite a few options for me to look at; however, what you have sounds close (very close) to what I am after, to be able to cruise all day and once in 5th - pretty much forget about any other gear!

I was actually looking at the V Thunder 3010 Kit as my bike isn't as heavy as yours.

Is that the Hillside you guys mean? If so, I'll take a ride and go and talk to them.
Check the link I posted.

texashillcountry,

Done and have been in touch with them. Hoping they will get back to me tomorrow so I can organise everything. I'll let you all know what I ended up with and how things went though.

Hey Wombat I used to live a 1/2 hour from you. Poolville. Just north of Sherburne. Scott in Munnsville will get everything you need. 315-495-6650. Hillside motorcycle and machine.....

I've been in touch with Scott and he seems to be a real nice guy and up front about things as well, which I like a lot. The really nice thing is that he can do the work as soon as I can get the bike to him, which is a bonus for me.

I told him what you guys recommended getting done and he seems to have agreed with it all other than the S & S Carby. He suggested getting an OEM Keihin CV instead. Don't know why but that was his suggestion and the only thing he changed from those recommended. Things are moving forward nicely and looks as though I'll have a good bike for this seasons rides!

If you have a '97 and it is stock you already have a CV carb.
Many people like them and say that with a few modifications they are a great carb.

texashillcountry,

Maybe that is what Scott was getting at then, that all my carby needs is some modifying. I'll know more when I get to speak with him properly. Would be nice if that was the case, save a few dollars and let me spend them on other improvements like a compatible exhaust system for example!!!!!!

The one thing I do know is that my bike is "B@#ch" to start when cold. It can take me up to 10 minutes of cranking her to get her to run, then I have to open the choke right up (which slides back to closed before I can scratch myself) or hold the throttle open a little for a few minutes at 2000 - 25000 RPMS before it will run at idle by itself. I put that down to the carby, perhaps I am wrong and perhaps it is something else. What I do know is that I get it tuned every season (by Harley) and no matter what they do it doesn't help; hence my wanting to change out the carby.

Once she does start and has been run for a little, she'll start with no problem at all and idle nice, a little high (I think) but nicely none the less. The problem is ONLY when the bike is cold or been sitting for a little while.

A good ignition will help with that.
Also try this
Pull the choke (from above you will probably have to hold it open), twist the throttle twice, then hit the start button.

Don't leave the choke on too long or it will foul the plugs.

Yep, tried that but thanks. Think I have tried everything I can think of to get it start first "kick" but never had any real success. Sounds like the real problem is the ignition then and I intend getting a GOOD one of those.

Sometimes I think the darn bike just can't be bothered going out and just wants to give me a hard time in the hope I'll leave it in its garage for the day lol
