Does anyone know if there is a way to use a 1989-2006 style starter on an 1984 Bagger with the use of the original transmission case? I know I will have to change the inner and outer primary and I am ok with that. I just want to be able to use the new style starter on my bike if possible.
The problem you will encounter when using a gearset with a splined mainshaft is that the main drive gear that is used with this gearset is designed for mounting a belt pulley, not a chain sprocket...
In addition to this issue, you would also need to use a clutch assembly with a splined hub.
Converting an `85-`88 bike is easy, but `84 and earlier, not so much......
I would think about finding a good aftermarket starter to fit the configuration you already have, and make sure all the mechanical hardware in the starter engagement system is in good condition.

I'm ok with with having to do the splined hub and all of that. Turns out the main drive gear in each transmission is 32 teeth. So I just have to pull the gear set out of the transmission I have sitting on the bench and just use the main drive gear in the case now and not mess with taking the pulley off of the main drive gear out.

The only splined mainshaft that may work with your old main drive gear is a 1990 model part.
`91 and later mainshafts have a smaller outside diameter at the bearing surface where the shaft is supported by the needle bearings inside the main drive gear.
The contact surfaces of the gear is also different between different years, so you must know what year parts you have to see if they are compatible.

If I may, it sounds like a lot to do just to change the starter setup. I replaced all my components and all is well, that solenoid showing tells the era of your bike at first glance, many people pick that right out.
