Default EV13 cam swap.....lifter noise.

OK, I did the swap and now it sounds like I have solid lifters. I mean, there is a lot of racket. I used the stock push rods and I changed the gear on the cam. .012" endplay, changed to a torrington bearing. The cam cover bushing is like brand new.
The bike has less than 15,000 miles on it and it nice and quiet before the cam swap. The lifters are good.
Is this normal cause I hate the sound of it. It has a lot more power and runs great but it sounds like my shovel head now. Worse maybe.
Ive been told to try adjustable pushrods and I have some in the mail, is this going to help?

Any help is appreciated

You don`t need adjustable pushrods.

What you are hearing is probably excess gear lash, it will sound just like a clattering lifter.

Use the cam gear that was on the original cam.

Sure you got the push rods back in the right spots?

I put the stock cam gear on the new cam. It can't be the gear.
The pushrods are in the right holes.

Did you give the lifters time to pump up? Did you replace the lifters? Did you check the oil after you got it back together?

Are you sure it's not just the new cam or is it that loud?

The lifters are pumped up. Its rideable.
I didn't replace the lifters but there was nothing wrong with them. They weren't noisy before the cam swap. I let them bleed down. Did it all by the book.
Ive been riding it but there is a lot of valve train noise.
Just a lot of racket that wasn't there before the cam change.
Has anyone else experienced this?

An EV 13 is not a noisy cam.

You should not be hearing a lot of clatter.

Since you used the original cam gear you are not hearing excess backlash (I misunderstood your original post).

Pushrod locations, longest to shortest:

front exhaust, rear exhaust, front intake, rear intake.

Check the oil pump, maybe it is not primed.

Remove the screw over the spring and check ball, then remove the spring and check ball.

You can either wait until oil from the tank flows in (it will eventually fill up that cavity) or pour some oil into the opening, replace the screw and fire it up.

Question:

When you installed the pushrods, and torqued down the lower rocker support bolts, did you do it exactly as the manual calls out (low part of cam facing up toward lifter, torque bolts, wait until lifter bleeds down before rotating crankshaft)?

Its an ev13 cam. The lifters have oil, I checked them. There is fresh oil right up to the top of the rocker covers. Ill check the pushrods again but Im 99% they are in the right place.
Thanks for the help guys.

Scunny, don`t accept a lot of lifter noise as normal.....It should be just about as quiet as it was before. I am running an EV 27, and it is no noisier than stock.

an ev-13 is just a tiny bit more than the stock harley N grind if you have that much noise then you probably have a set of tired lifters or a weak oil pump
