Diagram shows two spacers and the speedo drive. Spacers align the wheel to fit the caliper. Was the part falling out abount 1" in diameter?

A little hard to see, but #19 is drive, #11 is left spacer and 6 is right spacer. These spacers also contact the seal to seal the grease in and dirt out.

It must be something specific to EGs because every model I have seen with a front drive gear has only one spacer.
Well technically two but the left one is part of the drive gear.(as you said)
