Diy camgear change
Just finished a cam change for a buddy after swapping mine last winter.
While mine doesn't have a whine AT ALL, his one does sing a little.
So..have to swap with original gears this time.
But.... Unfortunatly I dont have immediate acces to a press.
I have read on this forum that it is possible to remove/install the gear mannualy by putting it in the freezer.
Can anyone ellaborate on this technique and do I have other options?
Thx a lot and keep the rubber side down ;-)
I think you would be a lot better off just taking it to someone with a press. They won't charge you much.
If you plan to do this, make sure you mark the gear so that you'll be able to see the mark and keyway on the cam in whatever position you'll need it in. It's going to be hot, you aren't going to be holding it or fiddling with it. You'll have to have some blocks set up to put the gear on and slip the cam in.
You have seconds to get it in line and slap it together. Once it locks up its not moving. I'm not sure how you plan on getting the gear off without a press. A hammer is going to damage the new cam. I tried this only because I had access to a press, but had to wait a week. I figured nothing to lose. Well it worked only halfway, it slid on like butter halfway then locked up. It ended up helping me come press time because I had it lined up just needed the press to get it the last half inch. I didn't have to fumble with the alignment, just slapped it on the press and cranked it down. I'm not sure if you get stuck you could use a torch on the gear to get it moving.
My advice, find a press, it will take you less time and if it's not aligned you can redo it. I'm all for diy and will try anything to avoid help but this is just a pain in the *** and a press is very easy. You want to diy this build a diy press out of wood , threaded rod and a bottle jack

It did go away and that was 35k miles ago.
Any idea of how much pressure the press should be able to produce?
Might just try to conjure up such apparel with some wood But I dont have any hard oak left.

Thx again for the info guys.
If it wasn't for the good people on this forum, I would have given up on decent EVO's and joined twinkie town.
Enjoy the ride folks ;-)
