It isn't required unless there is something wrong with your existing head bolts.

Really worried that one of the head bolts was finger loose when I go in there but that was where the head gasket was blown. The base gasket came off in many pieces as well.

Heads and jugs were sent off to the machine shop and should have them back tomorrow or Friday. Really hoping everything bolts back up fine this weekend.

Question: I heard some say I should replace the head bolts but I thought I read somewhere on here that it is not required. Thoughts?
Not wishing any bad luck on you, but the scenario your decribing is usually the result of a pulled cylinder stud.

Could have test that before dissassembling by retorquing the loose bolt to see if it held.

Hope that's not the case.

It does help having adjustables with some performance cams. The Woods in my 96" evo was noisy at original setup. Adding another flat to it added in an additional .050 of preload and quieted it right down.

Stock cams, I'd just pull the covers.

If your using 32 TPI pushrods 1 flat would equal .006" and one full revolution (6 flats) would be approx. .031"

Might as well throw in a set of aftermarket muffler bearings while you're at it.

I've had different cylinder studs pulled in me twice and both times or at least the first time I thought it was loosened cylinder head bolts which I learned don't just loosen off for no reason. I used time serts to fix the pulled studs.
