Default Getting ready to swap shift spring...

I posted last week about my '92 FXR trans and it seems to be the shift spring from the helpful comments here. Baker pawl and spring assembly, gaskets and service manual on their way. First time opening the primary for me and a few ???...

PO used some kind of decorative bolt covers it looks like...

They are tight and will not budget with anything I can get on them easily. Any suggestions?

Also bike was converted from mid controls by PO and original shaft is still there. Any extra steps I should be aware of when I get into this?

AND lastly (for now) What else should I look at while I'm in there? Chain tensioner? bearings? Never been inside before so I'm likely to make a mess, but hoping to muddle through it.....

Those are Allen head bolts. Probably 3/16", pop that little chrome cap lout with a tiny screw driver and it will reveal the Allen head.

What they said. Those are just stamped steel covers that press into the socket head. Pry the covers off with a tiny flat blade screwdriver. A bit of corrosion may be holding them in place. Try a bit of penetrating oil, maybe.

Thanks guys. That'll be my after work project. Is there a reason to have them or just leave them off afterwards?

Any bolts or parts I should be ready to replace in general just as general good sense?

They are just decoration no need to put back on if you don't want to.
Personally I don't like them. Just one more thing to deal with.

Replace all the seals that you can while you are in there.
Of the top of my head the inner primary to motor O-ring, inner primary seal, starter jack shaft seal and any seal on the tranny that you can easily access.

here's a thread I made about changing the shift pawl. never updated it, but it's just the reverse process of the tear down.
