Default 85 Wide Glide Price

My uncle has any 85 Wide Glide he bought new. It has 14K miles on it. And when I asked how much he wanted for it he told me what ever I thought it was worth. When I talked to my cousin last year he said it was all original except for the carb. And the chrome needs to be polished up. So KBB says retail is 5700 in excellent condition. But NADA say 17K for excellent condition. That is one heck of a difference. I dont want to rip him off, and I dont want to pay to much either. I am not very knowledgeable in this and I hope someone can shed some light on this for me. Thanks in advance.

NADA has lost their mind on some of their "collector" bike prices. $5700 is close to the mark.

Might want to check out completed ebay auctions for similar bikes. It's not perfect science by any means, but it doesn't hurt.

Also see if you can get a good indy shop to give the bike a pre-purchase inspection and perhaps even a ball-park appraisal. You can rent a trailer for pretty cheap for one day if need be.

He "bought it new", and so has had thirty years of enjoyment from it. He also told you: "what ever I thought it was worth". If it were me; considering it is a thirty year old bike with no particular outstanding modifications or features, you're buying it from a relative (who obviously wants to give you "a deal", or he would have it on e-bay or c-list), offer him five grand (which is probably more than he paid for it), and hold onto some cash for mods and upgrades that you're going to want to make. that bike's been ridden 500 miles a year; you have no idea what condition the internals could be in due to deferred maintenance or the possibility of neglect, so while I wouldn't let it get away, it's definitely a crap shoot.

If the bike needs work to run I'd go low. Good chance you'll be throwing money at it for a while. Sounds like it's been sitting a lot. Likely to have dried out seals and suck, ie.. leaks. You'll need tires. If it has set for a few years that carb may be toast as well as the tank unless they were drained. $5,000 would be for a running bike that need's very little.

It can't be too difficult to find what the list price was when it was new? I had a quick look but haven't had any joy. If it is around 5k, then that would make a sensible starting point. If he protests and says that's way too much then charle's onto a winner!

Hey Brown: What year/model/spec is your ZT? I visited the Longbridge plant in Birmingham and was quite impressed with what they were doing in the name of MG/Rover. Years ago I sold Rover 2000's and Land Rovers through Leyland in the 60's here in the states (Long Island, N.Y.). I'll NEVER get my hands around all of the iconic British Marques being now in the hands of the Chinese; never mind R/R now being owned by the GERMANS!!!!! Carry ON!
