Thank you.

Or call up Fox River Cycle in Milwaukee and make them an offer "off Ebay". They sell them on Ebay for $960, so tell them you can save them 10% fees by going direct. But I see that Powersportsuperstore.com link offers free shipping, so that might be the deal maker.

Strictly speaking, S&S don't like folk advertizing under MRSP, so the best deals happen in you call resellers. I can tell you where you can get quality pistons cheap too.

Actually, if you're willing to take a small gamble, there's a low mileage one up for $650 at the moment. It looks like a good deal as it's all set up with pinion shaft cogs etc for a late Evo (e.g. '98).

When I called Darkhorse, the tech I spoke to, I believe his name was John, went over the process of rebuilding my lower end. I would send my cases to them, they disassemble, clean and inspect everything. Check/replace the bearings, something about lapping, check runout, do the truing and balancing, and a number of other things that I can't recall at the moment. I would be getting back a better than new lower end that I wouldn't have to worry about and concentrate on a putting together a good top end.

If you're going with a radical cam then let them know.
From what I understand some of the radical ones need clearance checked on the right case.

Forgot to mention I'm not trying to build a stroker or a race engine, just a good running daily rider that might surprise those 103's out there and give me many trouble free miles

Even if it costs no more, or less? From comments above, vibrations don't seem to be an attached issue.

They could be lapping the flywheel crankpin bores and/or the conrod big ends ... here's a howit happens but I'd want to see an itemized breakdown. You may be paying for stuff that is perfectly serviceable. And a parts washer at $80 an hour.

Vtwinmfg also do a swop out standard stroke 80ci, complete with quality Truett & Osborne stock flywheels for $960 if you want to stick at stock capacity. Then you could sell your old crank for $100, $200+? I see them at down to $930. Truett and Osborn themselves are at $1400 for a new crank, complete with their flywheels and H-beam rods etc. You'd have a choice of heavy or light flywheels there.

You'd need a few bits and bobs, gaskets and seals etc. but the assembly bit you can't do yourself should only take an hour or so.

Thanks for that tip TexasHill, I'll ask about clearancing for big cams. And thanks to everyone else for your replies. I'll keep this updated as my build goes on.

I'm cautious in case someone else screws up the job but it's good to lay down the facts and look around at other alternatives just to give any estimate context.

Wasn't grbrown's 89" conversion a Dyna? It's not a huge difference but ask him.

It sounds like for $1200 your short block is being completely re-manufactured ... but it seems like a lot of money. Do you really need to replace everything? What new parts are included?

Have you tried for an estimate of what you just need?

No, my Dyna was a TC88, my 89" stroker was my Evo Glide below, in one of it's earlier guises (S&S 107" now).
